Tokio.- Los organizadores de los JJOO de Tokio 2020 y el Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI) acordaron hoy retrasar el evento deportivo hasta el verano de 2021 debido a la pandemia de coronavirus, en una decisión que se ha hecho esperar pese a ser un secreto a voces.
Los acontecimientos se han precipitado desde que el pasado domingo el COI se diera un plazo de cuatro semanas para decidir si los Juegos se iban o retrasar o no, y en caso de hacerlo, hasta cuándo.
No fueron necesarios ni tres días desde ese anuncio para que las partes implicadas llegaran a una resolución, que se ha visto acelerada por el implacable avance del coronavirus por todo el planeta y por las presiones crecientes de atletas, federaciones deportivas y organismos olímpicos nacionales.
APLAZADOS UN AÑO COMO MÁXIMO
Los Juegos de Tokio tendrán lugar finalmente «después de 2020 pero no más allá del verano de 2021», según acordaron el primer ministro nipón, Shinzo Abe, y el presidente del COI, Thomas Bach, en una conversación telefónica que mantuvieron este martes y en la que también participaron representantes de las autoridades deportivas y políticas de Japón.
«Japón, como país anfitrión, bajo las actuales circunstancias, ha propuesto que (el COI) estudie si se puede aplazar en cerca de un año (los JJOO) para que los atletas puedan tener las mejores condiciones posibles», dijo Abe en declaraciones a los periodistas tras la teleconferencia.
«En las actuales circunstancias, y basándonos en los datos de la Organización Mundial de la Salud, el presidente del COI y el primer ministro de Japón concluimos que los JJOO de la XXXII Olimpiada en Tokio deben ser cambiados a una fecha más allá de 2020, pero no posterior al verano de 2021», señaló por su parte el COI en un comunicado.
«Esta medida pretende proteger la salud de los atletas, de las demás personas implicadas en los Juegos Olímpicos y de la comunidad internacional», señala la nota, que también se hace eco de la «propagación impredecible e inaudita del virus que ha agravado la situación en el resto del mundo».
Hasta hace apenas una semana, posponer los juegos había sido un tabú para el Gobierno nipón, al menos en su postura oficial, y también una opción que Bach se resistía a reconocer
Pero el peso de los acontecimientos empezó a cambiar el discurso de Abe y del propio Bach en los últimos días, mientras otras voces del Comité Olímpico Internacional hablaban abiertamente de la cancelación o del retraso de los Juegos y el mundo del deporte reclamaba una pronta solución.
NO SE TOCAN EL NOMBRE NI LA LLAMA OLÍMPICA
Los organizadores nipones han decidido conservar Tokio 2020 como nombre del evento, y podrán mantener en su territorio la llama olímpica que llegó desde Olimpia (Grecia) a tierras niponas la semana pasada, para simbolizar así «la luz al final del túnel en que nos encontramos ahora», según el comunicado del COI.
Por petición del primer ministro nipón, la llama se quedará provisionalmente en la prefectura de Fukushima (al nordeste de Tokio), una de las regiones más afectadas por el terremoto y el tsunami de 2011 seguidos de un accidente nuclear, y donde estaba planeado que comenzara el relevo de la antorcha este mismo viernes.
Y es que el paso de la caravana olímpica por esta y otras regiones castigadas por el desastre natural iba a servir como escaparate para su reconstrucción y recuperación económica, que se sitúan entre las prioridades políticas del Gobierno de Abe.
A partir de ahora, el simbolismo de la llama olímpica abarcará también la lucha de la humanidad contra el coronavirus, que curiosamente -y por el momento- ha afectado en menor medida a Japón que a otros países asiáticos y europeos.
RETOS POR DELANTE
Los organizadores tienen ahora la misión de mantener el buen estado de preparación de Tokio para acoger los Juegos que había sido elogiado repetidamente por el COI, además de mantener la moral de los nipones, que también se habían volcado con el evento.
«Lamento la decisión pero estoy muy aliviado», dijo tras conocerse la decisión el máximo responsable del comité organizador de Tokio 2020, Yoshiro Mori, quien añadió que desde ahora «podrán centrarse en preparar unos Juegos mejores aún».
El propio Mori admitió no obstante que «serán necesarios muchos ajustes», entre ellos el uso de las sedes olímpicas, puesto que algunas «están reservadas ya para después de este verano» y por tanto no podrían utilizarse en 2021.
«Tendremos que encontrar una forma de hacerlo, aún no sabemos cómo», señaló sobre las instalaciones deportivas, que incluyen sedes construidas específicamente para los Juegos, algunas edificadas con carácter temporal y otras ya existentes y con las que se contaba para las fechas iniciales de Tokio 2020.
A esto se sumarán los costes presupuestarios por definir que tendrá el retraso del evento o qué ocurrirá con los millones de entradas que ya se han vendido para los Juegos, entre otras muchas complicaciones logísticas.
